According to the meteorological calendar, Autumn starts at the beginning of September…the astronomical calendar however says that it doesn’t officially commence until the Autumn Equinox which, this year, is on 23rd September.
For me it began very suddenly in mid-August when I returned home from a blue-skies-and-sunshine-every-single-blissful-day holiday to grey skies and drizzle. My sandals and summer dresses were quickly put away and replaced by winter boots and jumpers.
But it’s not all bad…there’s something rather special about Autumn don’t you think? Once you get over the initial shock that summer is over and gone and it’s not coming back for another year I mean? The temperature is cooling, the days are getting shorter and there’s a subtle shift in mood and atmosphere. The colour of everything around us is changing, and for me that means it’s time to cosy up my shop and sprinkle in some Autumnal goodness. Where to start? With the roses of course!
Here are some of my Autumn newbies in a lush, rich palette of berry, burnt orange and dusky pink…
As you can see, baby rose bead pairs are back at last!! Roses are pretty much my all-time favourite flower, and I’ve been making rose beads for a long time now. I think the thing I love the most about these beautiful blooms is the almost hypnotic swirl of their petals, and because I like to emphasise this my regular rose beads have grown quite large recently! So I’ve decided to add in a new size to run alongside my regular ‘large’ roses and my pairs of baby roses…perfect for those who prefer a slightly smaller bead!
More newbie Autumnal rose beads, this time in Ochre and Pumpkin…
Next up is one of my all-time favourite creatures, the hedgehog! With the arrival of Autumn and the hedgehog breeding season drawing to a close, young hedgehogs leave their mothers to go off in search of food on their own. But with the colder weather, their food supply is dwindling…and if they don’t get enough food, they don’t stand a very good chance of surviving hibernation. So in honour of these brave and worthy creatures, a hedgehog bead!
And some other woodland creatures I’ve always been fascinated by…owls! As with all of my beads, these are individually handcrafted feather by feather!
Whilst I was sprinkling some Autumnal magic into my little shop, I decided to make some new Love Bird Beads too, in a beautifully rustic Faded Terracotta…
as well as lots of new beaded beads in rich autumnal hues!
And finally, an autumnal bracelet featuring some of my new beads…inspired by seasonal fruit picking, I made a blackberry bead and teamed it with some of my autumn roses and beaded beads , then added some gorgeous glass leaves and rustic freshwater pearls.
So my last job before I publish this post is to give it a name. My initial thoughts were something along the lines of “WHO STOLE SUMMER???” But on reflection, that wouldn’t be fair. I love Autumn!!
